Con-man 'Fizzy' known for his love of expensive champagne defrauded victims out of vast money to maintain his luxury lifestyle and has been sentenced to serve 8 years in jail.
Frank Onyeachonam was jailed at the Old Bailey for ripping victims off for hundreds of thousands pounds. The 38 year old from Canning Town continued conning people after his arrest, the judge described him as "an arrogance that is unbelievable" and as showing "no remorse" for his crimes.
Courtesy of his victims, Onyeachonam lived an extravagant lifestyle with a riverside luxury apartment, two houses in Nigeria, high-end sports cars and frequented a Canary Wharf private members' club where he would only drink £500 bottles of Ace of Spades champagne.
The National Crime Agency said 'Fizzy' had a variation on the traditional lottery scam and encouraged victims to set up 'legitimate' businesses, with bank accounts. They were then used to launder money taken from his lottery scam. All victims received letters advising they'd won the Australian lottery and were persuaded to pay fees and taxes to receive their prize.
'Fizzy' was found with names of over 5,000 US citizens, along with more than 400 bank details on his 'sucker' lists. The National Crime Agency seized pictures showing fridges full of luxury champagne, as well as huge amounts of cash, one even spelling out his ‘Fizzy’ nickname in notes. But after an investigation by NCA officers alongside the Met, the IRS and the FBI in America, as well as the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, he was arrested in October 2011.
